Introduction
"I stare down at my shoes, watching a fine layer of ash settles on the worn leather." (page 1) In the beginning of the book Katniss is walking through the ashes of what used to be District 12. We feel that this is a dramatic description in the beginning because of the colossal calamity caused by the Capitiol. It is dramatic because Katniss's home has been demolished and she now has to live in District 13. We feel the beginning of the book is interesting for people who read the first two books because they do not know what will happen. We also thought the beginning of the book was not at all boring.
Power
The book is based around the fact that the citizens of Panem are not happy with the way President Snow is ruling Panem. He not being a fair ruler, so District 13, and other districts, are rebelling. President Snow has power over them; power that he is not using responsibly. Only the Capitol, which is where he lives, is getting the right amount of attention and proper care, and maybe even more. This is why the poorer districts, and others as well, are rebelling for a better ruler who doesn't take advantage of their power. But, even President Coin, the president of District 13, wouldn't have been a fair ruler either. She was just as bad as Snow because she lied about whose bomb killed the wall of children. She manipulates people to think one thing that isn't necessarily true. Katniss knew this, therefore, she killed Coin instead of Snow, because at least she knew that Snow was truthful.
Love
A major theme in this book is love. One example of love is when Katniss forms the plan to save Peeta. She did this because he loves her and she loves him. She also knows that he would have saved her if he was under the same circumstances. Gale loves Katniss as well, which makes Katniss have conflicted emotions about loving Peeta because her and Gale knew each other longer. Another big reason that love is a major theme in this book is because even though Peeta's mind was altered to despise Katniss, he realized he still loved her after spending a few extra days with her when they were trying to raze the Capitol. Katniss also realizes that she loves Peeta and eventually they get married. This leads to the line "You love me. Real or not real?" And Katniss responds, "Real."
Voice
Another theme in this book is Katniss's voice. A person's voice is basically their personality, or who they are. In this book Katniss is still trying to figure out who she is and what she wants to do with her life. In this book Katniss's voice changes when she develops a fervor of kill Snow. She realizes that her voice is changing to helping more people than just Primrose and her mother. Other things in her voice change, like loving Peeta for herself and not for a crowd, and trying to move on after deaths of loved ones even if they are missed.
